The Shipping Forecast, first broadcast by the state TV company in 1924, will maintain its daily list of conditions off the UK coast.

The Met Office said it would go on supplying data to the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA), which produces the programme.

There were fears that the slot could end after the BBC said it had to put its weather forecasts out to tender.

But Steve Noyes, operations managers, said: “We continue to provide our expert forecasts on independent television networks and there are also now many other news organisations increasingly sharing Met Office content online.

“We’ll continue to provide the Shipping Forecast to the MCA, who will make it available to broadcasters.”
