Danish shipowner Celsius Shipping has added another boxship, bringing its fleet to 43.

The Jeppe Jensen-led company has confirmed the purchase of the 4,132-teu containership JPO Capricornus (built 2005) from German KG (limited partnership) shipowner Oltmann.

The Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries-built vessel has reportedly gone for $8.6m.

Panamax revival

The deal comes amid renewed interest for traditional panamax boxships, with shipowners Borealis Maritime and Sinokor Merchant Marine recently linked to such purchases.

Four years ago, a ship of the JPO Capricornus' characteristics would be worth more than $18m, according to VesselsValue.

Jensen confirmed the JPO Capricornus deal, but he denied reports that Celsius has also bought Hisafuku Kisen's 47,000-dwt tanker Leopard (built 2010) for $17m.

Rejecting reports

He similarly rejected reports that Hellerup-headquartered Celsius had purchased Glencore’s 47,000-dwt tanker Glanda Megan (built 2009) for $16.2m.

Founded seven years ago and backed by Bayside Capital and Breakwater Capital, Celsius is now listed with a fleet of 42 trading ships from bulkers to tankers and boxships.

It entered into the containership segment in 2017 and has a fleet of seven units. The JPO Capricornus will be the largest boxship in Celsius' fleet.

The company has also ordered four LNG newbuildings at Samsung Heavy Industries.
