The viable stern section of the fire-ravaged Maersk Honam is en route to South Korea to have a new bow fitted.

The rear part of the 15,262-teu boxship (built 2017) was loaded onto Cosco's 98,000-dwt heavylift ship Xin Guang Hua (built 2016) off Dubai on 2 February.

Maersk Line said it is now in transit and is expected to pass Singapore on Monday.

The 228.5m section will be delivered next month to Hyundai Heavy Industries — where it was originally built. There it will be joined to a new bow.

The rebuilt ship is expected back in service in the second half of this year.

The forward section is safely moored at Drydocks World Dubai for continued removal of damaged containers and debris. Once cleaned, it will be recycled.

"In accordance with our Responsible Ship Recycling Standard, relevant recycling options are being investigated and evaluated," Maersk Line said.

Five crew died in the blaze on the ship off Oman last March.

TradeWinds has reported the repair bill at more than $30m.

The decision to rebuild was taken after a damage assessment revealed the engine room and main propulsion and machinery components were intact.
