French line CMA CGM has carried out its first bunkering with sustainable biofuel.

The 5,095-teu CMA CGM White Shark (built 2007) took on the oil at a trial in Rotterdam on Saturday.

The fuel is supplied by GoodFuels in a scheme also involving the port and Ikea.

It marks a "major step for sustainable marine biofuel oil as [a] credible decarbonising fuel option for sector," the companies said.

They added: "Results from the trial will give the maritime sector a vital demonstration into the scalability, sustainability and technical compliance of sustainable marine bio-fuel oil.

"This will benefit all industry stakeholders in their environmental strategies, in line with the impending International Maritime Organisation (IMO) decarbonisation pathway."

The oil is completely derived from forest residues and waste cooking oil products.

It is expected to deliver 80% to 90% CO2 reduction versus fossil equivalents, and virtually eliminate sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions.
