Mexican authorities found 279 kilogrammes of cocaine on a Maersk containership in the port of Manzanillo.

The country’s Navy Secretariat said 295 packages of the drugs were found during an inspection of a container from the 4,260-teu Laura Maersk (built 2001). The packages were hidden inside a cargo of magnetic rollers.

The container had been loaded on the Denmark-flagged ship in Arica, Chile.

Federal law enforcement authorities have launched an investigation.

The illicit cargo was one of several discovered in recent weeks at the port, and the second on the Laura Maersk.

On 24 November, authorities announced the discovery of 214 kilogrammes of cocaine in a container that had been unloaded from the 6,350-teu APL Turkey (built 2009).

A few days earlier, a half tonne of the drug was found in a container that had shipped on the 5,610-teu APL Holland (built 2001).

A month ago, authorities found 228 kilogrammes of cocaine on a box from the Laura Maersk.
