A gang of Colombian drug smugglers has been arrested after a Hapag-Lloyd master saw them on his containership.

The DPA news agency said the incident occurred on the 4,800-teu Rotterdam Express (built 2000) at Cartagena.

Colombian security forces have seized about 185 kg of cocaine.

Hapag-Lloyd confirmed the incident and said its ship had continued to sail.

It added that a container with drugs inside was destined for the US, but could give no more information due to pending investigations.

The master had alerted authorities after strangers were spotted on board.

Police and soldiers later found 10 men dressed in black who had trespassed on to the ship.

The vessel was heading from Cartagena to the Dominican Republic.

The HSB Noticias website said 185 rectangular packages of the drug were found.
