Fire has broken out in a container and spread to others onboard a Hapag-Lloyd containership on Friday.
Efforts were made immediately to extinguish the fire onboard the 7,510-dwt Yantian Express (built 2002).
However, they have been suspended due to a “significant deterioration of weather conditions”, the Germany-based carrier said in a statement.
The ship’s crew of 23, including eight officers, is unharmed, but Hapag-Lloyd said it was still too early to assess the damage to the vessel or its cargo.
The Germany-flagged boxship is approximately 650 nautical miles off the coast of Canada at present and is en route to Halifax from Colombo, Sri Lanka via the Suez Canal.
