Japanese owner NYK has deployed its full range of fancy simulation technology to entice the next generation of seafarers into the industry.

But the most important piece of kit used at its weekend parents-and-children day might have been the stool used to make sure one future officer could reach the controls of a mocked-up car carrier.

The youngsters were encouraged to try their hand at navigating the ship through Tokyo Bay as part of the owner's NYK Mirai Project.

Fourteen lucky kids were picked by the drawing of lots to participate in a variety of programmes related to seafaring careers, held at Japan Marine Science and an NYK subsidiary company in Kanagawa.

The simulator is used for the actual training of captains and officers.

The children also enjoyed using blocks to understand the structure of a containership, NYK said.
