Iran's IRISL has denied reports that a boxship has been held in Libya due to US sanctions.

No ship has been seized, Iran Front Page cited IRISL managing director Mohammad Saeidi as saying.

"There are disagreements with the Libyan government over a ship, but it has not been seized, and we are in talks to settle the differences," he added.

The Libya Observer had cited a statement by the Libyan interior ministry on Saturday as saying that it had seized the 2,188-teu Shahr e Kord (built 2012) because it was on a US blacklist.

The public prosecutor had ordered the seizure of the vessel pending investigations into reports of illegal goods on board, the statement said.

The statement added that the seizure of the ship came after news had broken on social media and media outlets that the Iranian vessel was entering Misrata port with an unknown shipment on board.

No prohibited goods have been found, however.

AIS showed it still at Misrata on Monday morning.

It had arrived from Burgas in Bulgaria.
