Two boxship lines are introducing war risk surcharges in the Middle East Gulf as their costs rise.
CMA CGM unit APL and X-Press Feeders said separately that insurance premiums have been increasing following the recent tanker attacks.
Ships have been targeted with mines or torpedoes off Fujairah and in the Strait of Hormuz in recent weeks, with the US blaming Iran. Iran has denied involvement.
APL said that due to these incidents and the "significantly" higher costs in the region, it is adding $36 per teu.
This applies to all trades, excluding the US and China, from 5 July.
Cargo to the US and China will be affected from 1 August.
The charge applies to calls at Oman, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia (Dammam and Jubail), Kuwait and Iraq.
Additional countries might be added depending on the situation in the region, the company said.
X-Press Feeders is also introducing a war risk surcharge, but it did not reveal the amount.
"In the wake of all these recent attacks, and escalating geopolitical risks and tension in the Middle East region, additional insurance premiums have been imposed to all ships transiting through the Gulf of Oman," it said.
"In addition, to ensure the safety of the crew as well as goods on board, critical measures such as vessel speed escalation in the day and avoiding night sailing through the vulnerable areas will be undertaken."
