Danish boxship giant Maersk Line says it has become the first liner operator to offer digital ocean customs clearance.

Its online platform has launched in Germany, France, Denmark, the Netherlands, Poland, the UK and Spain. And the aim is to roll it out worldwide by the end of this year.

“This new one-stop shop allows us to timely and efficiently handle export and import declarations for our customers," Maersk Line chief commercial officer Vincent Clerc said.

"The solution provides downstream benefits of full governance and compliance, eliminates the need to provide a quote as pricing is displayed online, saving three to five minutes per quote."

He added time, money and headaches — as well as paperwork — will be saved.

A pilot scheme has been running in Germany for two years.
