Staff at Ocean Network Express (ONE)’s East Asia division recently spent a Sunday doing their bit to make life easier for Hong Kong’s humble horseshoe crab.
Working with the Ocean Park Conservative Foundation Hong Kong, they helped clean the mudflats on Lantau Island to restore the feeding ground of what are described as “living fossils”.
Blue blood
Horseshoe crabs have existed for more than 200 million years, and the extract of their blood, which is blue, is widely used to make bacterial detectors for testing medical products. Their natural habitat is mudflats, which have been degraded due to development and pollution.
More than 40 employees collected in excess of 100 kilos of rubbish.
“ONE is proud of having a sizeable office in Hong Kong, in which areas of beautiful natural scenery and metropolitan are within a stone’s throw distance,” ONE East Asia managing director Shunichiro Mizukami said.
“As a member of this city, we should make our best effort to preserve this wonderful environment, which is also one of the sustainability commitments of ONE.”
