Low-profile London owner Unity Maritime has added to its fleet with a modern Japanese-built handysize.

The company, owned by Danny Ungar, said it has welcomed the 37,140-dwt Susanoo Harmony (built 2020) this month.

The bulker was previously owned by Japanese trading house Orix Corp.

VesselsValue assesses it as worth $28.95m, up from $27m two years ago.

Brokers had reported a price of $29.5m for the deal, but the buyer was previously not known.

“The purchase is another milestone for Unity Maritime, which is committed to investing in high-quality vessels,” the UK owner said.

All of Unity Maritime’s vessels are managed by sister operation Unity Ship Management.

Unity Maritime said it is continuing its expansion with “unwavering dedication to meeting the ever-evolving demands of the maritime industry and our charterers”.

“The business … looks forward to continued growth and success, with further elevation of capabilities and services.”

The Unity website lists the fleet with an average age of seven years and a capacity of 1m dwt.

Ship management expansion

In November, Unity Maritime took the first steps to fleet expansion through a crew management joint venture with Singapore’s Synergy Marine.

It is targeting up to 50 dry bulk carriers through new operation US Crewing Services in Varna, Bulgaria.

Unity, rebranded from DAO Shipping in 2023, owned 18 handysizes, supramaxes, ultramaxes and kamsarmaxes built between 2012 and 2019 at that time.

The company is part of investment outfit Unity Group, which also has extensive property interests.

It added the 60,400-dwt ultramax Nord Everest (built 2016) from Norden in Denmark towards the end of last year.

Danny Ungar is the son of Abraham “Rami” Ungar, who owns Ray Car Carriers, a tonnage provider that has a fleet of 65 car carriers on charter to many of the world’s leading operators.

TradeWinds was told Unity will fulfil its “bold” growth ambitions with secondhand buys and eventually the crewing of third-party vessels.
