Greek bulker and tanker player Niovis Shipping has ordered two ultramaxes at Oshima Shipbuilding.
It revealed on its fleet list that it has a pair of 64,000-dwt ships under construction, due for delivery in 2026 and 2027.
The company founded by the Mavroleon family disclosed no further details about the ships’ price and specifications.
According to Clarksons, however, the contract was concluded in May and the ships are due for delivery in November 2026 and January 2027.
Information available on S&P Global suggests that one of them could be Hull No 11157 — a vessel featured by the database as due for delivery by the Japanese yard at the end of 2026.
As far as the price is concerned, some guidance can be inferred from a previous ultramax deal at Oshima on account of Shih Wei Navigation.
TradeWinds reported in February that the Taiwanese company paid Oshima $39m each for a pair of 64,000-dwt ultramaxes due for delivery in 2026.
The Shi Wei newbuildings will be conventionally powered and built to the latest Energy Efficiency Design Index Phase 3 requirements and comply with the International Maritime Organization’s latest NOx Tier III rules.
Seasoned player
Niovis has a long history of dealing with top shipyards in Japan and South Korea, including four specially designed, wide-beam and shallow-draught 66,000-dwt ultramaxes built by Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding’s Tamano Shipyard between 2014 and 2020.
The last time Niovis ordered bulkers in February 2021, however, it picked Chinese yard Nantong Cosco KHI Ship Engineering Co for a pair of 61,100-dwt ultramaxes.
Niovis manages another ultramax built at Oshima, the 64,700-dwt Maroudio (built 2022).
It is not clear, however, whether Niovis ordered the ship itself or if it acquired it as a resale or manages it on behalf of third-party owners.
The new ultramax pair it has ordered at Oshima will add to its modern bulker fleet of 16 supramaxes and ultramaxes.
At the end of 2017, the company joined the tanker trade as well and owns three such vessels.
In contrast to its bulker fleet, Niovis has entrusted its tankers with pool operators.
The 113,200-dwt aframax Philotimos (built 2018) is with pool operator Signal Maritime, while the 40,000-dwt handysize Bagheera (built 2014) is listed with Norden and the 50,000-dwt Philoxenia (built 2019) with Singapore-based Ishima Pte.
