Hong Kong-based Honwin Shipping’s only bulk carrier has been arrested in Singapore.

The 57,300-dwt bulk carrier Honwin (built 2009) was seized at the request of Marco Polo Shipping on Saturday.

Court records that TradeWinds was able to access indicate that the tug and barge division of the Singapore-based Marco Polo Marine is seeking payment or security for collision damage it claims the Honwin caused to one of its barges in 2022.

The Honwin and the barge Bina Marine 59 came into contact with each other near the Indonesian island of Batam on 11 June last year.

The barge was reported by Indonesian authorities as safe after the incident, although it was said to have been semi-submerged at one point in time.

The collision took place just after Honwin Shipping had taken delivery of the ship in Singapore after acquiring it as Thunder from Costamare.

Industry sources say Honwin Shipping is a special-purpose shipowning vehicle controlled by Chinese interests. The company’s registered address is that of a corporate services entity and it has no listed email or phone numbers that TradeWinds was able to reach out on for further comment.

ClassNK, the Honwin’s classification society, lists the ship as being managed by WYW Ship Management, another Hong Kong-registered entity that shares the same address as Honwin Shipping and has no listed contact details.
