ABS executive vice president Kirsti Tikka is retiring after 19 years at the Houston based classification society.

Tikka, who is 62, is to join Pacific Basin as independent non-executive director.

In a statement Pacific Basin said: “Environmental regulations, sustainability and new technologies including new ship and engine designs as well as new fuels and propulsion technologies will become increasingly important challenges for Pacific Basin and our industry.

"The board believes that Dr. Tikka’s extensive experience in these areas as well as her strategic, management and operational experience in the maritime industry will be beneficial to the company’s business and development.”

Tikka joined ABS in 2001 and was appointed vice president last year after holding several leadership roles in strategic planning and the company’s sustainability programme.

Previously she had worked with Chevron Shipping and Wartsila Shipyards.

Kirsi Tikka was born in Finland, where she gained a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and naval architecture at the University of Technology in Helsinki.
