A capesize and panamax bulker both fetched multi-month charters at rates just above the market on Friday.

Diana Shipping has chartered the 174,261-dwt Semirio (built 2007) to Solebay Shipping Cape Company at $14,150 per day from 20 August to anywhere from 20 November 2024 to 30 January 2025.

The New York-listed owner of 41 bulkers said it expects the fixture will make $6.38m in gross revenue for the minimum period of the charter.

The ship was previously chartered to C Transport Maritime at $19,700 per day from 15 December 2021 to 20 August 2023.

Clarksons Research has assessed the rate for a one-year charter of a 170,000-dwt capesize at $14,000 per day from 21 July to 4 August.

Korea Asset Management Corp fixed the 80,850-dwt, scrubber-fitted SM Santos (built 2020) at $13,500 per day to Cargill for between 11 months and 13 months, according to the Baltic Exchange.

Cargill will take delivery of the vessel in the Indian port of Haldia and can redeliver it anywhere at the end of the charter.

Clarksons Research assessed the rate for a one-year charter of an 82,000-dwt panamax at $12,300 per day on 4 August, down from $14,150 per day on 14 June.

The spot market for these bulker types traded below the period market for most of this past week.

The Baltic Exchange’s Capesize 5TC set of spot-rate averages across five key routes has fallen 12.5% over the past seven days to $13,200 per day on Friday, while the Panamax 5TC has risen 18% to $12,037 per day.

Australian miner Rio Tinto fixed an unnamed capesize to carry 170,000 tonnes of iron ore from Dampier, Australia, to Qingdao, China, at $7.70 per tonne after loading the ship from 26 to 28 August.

A week earlier, an unrevealed charterer fixed an unnamed capesize to carry the same amount of ore on the same route at $8.35 per tonne after the ship is loaded from 18 to 20 August.
