Japanese shipyard Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) has been granted approval in principle (AIP) from ClassNK for its LNG-fuelled 207,000-dwt capesize bulk carrier design.
The AIP was granted based on ClassNK’s Rule Part GF, one of the class society’s rules for the survey and construction of steel ships.
The rule adopts the IMO’s International Code of Safety for Ship Using Gases or Other Low-Flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code) and verifies that the ship design complies with these safety standards.
“The maritime industry has been setting its sights on LNG as an energy source for ships as it is an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels. Kawasaki Heavy Industries is taking full advantage of this opportunity as well with their new bulk-carrier design,” said Hayato Suga, ClassNK’s corporate officer and director of technical solution department.
“We have carefully confirmed the safety of the design and are proud to contribute to this project.”
