A second VLOC of the year has been sold for demolition, according to multiple reports.

NYK Line of Japan has reportedly sold its 250,900-dwt MG Shipping (built 1993) for demolition in India at a price of $395 per ldt or $15.7m in total.

The deal would appear to be the first bulk carrier sold to Indian interests for demolition since March 2018, according to VesselsValue data.

The ship was originally built as a VLCC but in 2009 was converted to an ore carrier at the Cosco Dalian shipyard.

The sale follows the demolition of NS United’s 229,500-dwt VLOC Confidence I (built 1999), which on 8 January was reported sold to Bangladeshi buyers at an undisclosed price.

AIS data shows the 27,000-ldt vessel was bound for Alang as of 8 February.

Aside from these two VLOCs, 2019 has seen demolition deals reported for just three other capesize bulk carriers.

The capes have an average age of 25 years and all achieved prices of $420-440 per ldt in late January and early February.

Two of the capes were reported sold to Bangladeshi interests.

The final destination of the third vessel, the 150,900-dwt K Promise (built 1994), was not reported by brokers, but AIS data shows the vessel has been berthed off Qingdao, China since 3 February.

TradeWinds has contacted NYK Line for confirmation.
