Further design details about NYK Line’s recent Newcastlemax bulker order at Japan Marine United (JMU Corp) have emerged.
The yard confirmed the first order for this new 211,000-dwt J-series type, which builds on its previous Newcastlemax G-series in early July 2019.
The design combines increased deadweight with reduced fuel consumption compared with the pre-ceding G209 BC design, according to Braemar ACM.
After delivery in 2021, the vessel, which will be fitted with a scrubber, will be assigned to a long-term charter with JFE Steel Corp.
“The J211 BC retains the dimensions of the G209 BC, while achieving an increase in deadweight of about 1,000 tonnes,” Braemar said in its monthly dry bulk report.
“Energy-saving appendages have been included, along with a low-wind resistance superstructure as well as the builder’s ‘LEADGE bow’ design.”
The shipbroker said the yard has improved corrosion resistance by using the corrosion-resistant steel JFE-SIP-CC, which was developed by JFE Steel, on the outer plates and frames of holds, and some inner bottom plates.
“This steel is particularly beneficial for coal transport, where ships are subjected to severe corrosion due to the sulphuric acid originating from the sulphuric contents of the coal,” Braemar added.
