Oldendorff Carriers has sold another two bulk carriers, bringing its total number of vessels sold this year to 14.

The transactions show that the German owner-operator is continuing its clearout of nearly new kamsarmaxes, making more money every time it sells one.

Brokers report that Oldendorff has sold the 82,143-dwt Kristian Oldendorff (built 2024) to HMM of South Korea for $40.85m, having taken delivery of the ship in February.

The kamsarmax was built at China’s Jiangsu New Hantong Ship Heavy Industry to the Dolphin 82 MK IV design and has scrubbers and a ballast water treatment system on board.

The reported price is a fraction above what Oldendorff achieved last month, when it sold a pair of nearly new kamsarmaxes built at Jiangsu for around $80m in total.

The 82,200-dwt Kamilla Oldendorff (built 2024) and Klarissa Oldendorff (built 2023) were sold in June to unidentified buyers, having been delivered just a few months earlier.

The Kristian Oldendorff, Kamilla Oldendorff and Klarissa Oldendorff are all part of a five-strong kamsarmax order at Jiangsu contracted between July and September 2021.

All but one of the vessels have been sold to date.

The selling began in October last year when Oldendorff offloaded the 82,206-dwt Kuno Oldendorff (renamed Meltemi, built 2022) to Petrofin for $33m.

That was followed in April with the sale of the 82,200-dwt Ken Oldendorff (renamed BTG Misti, built 2023), which Bulk Trading Group of Norway bought for an undisclosed price.

This leaves the 82,155-dwt Kaya Oldendorff (built 2024), which could be next on the block if Oldendorff chooses to continue its selling streak.

Oldendorff has ordered a total of 19 kamsarmaxes at Jiangsu since 2021, all built to the Dolphin 82,000-dwt MK IV design.

The company has also been selling off older tonnage and offloaded an older, Japan-built post-panamax earlier this month.

The 95,750-dwt Claas Oldendorff (built 2013) was reported sold in mid-July to Singaporean interests for $27m.

The vessel, which was built at Imabari Shipbuilding to the yard’s Nexter design, has scrubbers and a ballast water treatment system on board.

Oldendorff has been contacted for comment on the sales.

Second choice

Panamaxes and kamsarmaxes have been the second most popular bulkers in the sale-and-purchase market so far this year.

A total of 54 vessels have been sold, representing 25% of all bulkers that have changed hands in 2024, according to data from Allied Shipbroking.

Only supramaxes and ultramaxes have been more popular in the S&P market this year. Allied has tracked 90 transactions for these vessels.
