Norway’s Torvald Klaveness is eyeing more Asian business with a new office in Japan.

The group said the commercial presence was established for Klaveness Dry Bulk through the formation of Klaveness Japan KK.

The subsidiary will strengthen Klaveness’ global foothold and commitment to deliver localised client service, the shipping company said.

The base is located in Marunouchi, in the heart of Tokyo’s business district.

Klaveness Japan KK aims to become an additional hub for commercial activities in Asia, building on an existing presence on the continent with offices in Singapore, Manila and Dubai, the Norwegian manager and pool operator said.

The office will be headed by Haruki Chua, general manager for Klaveness Japan KK.

He said: “I am thrilled to spearhead our operations in Japan. Being in close proximity to the Japanese market increases our capacity to nurture existing relationships and forge new ones.”

Chua has been with Klaveness since 2018.

Head of Klaveness Dry Bulk, Michael Jorgensen, added: “Klaveness has a strong relationship with Japan, notably through our ties with Marubeni and our pool business.”

“Establishing a physical foothold is a natural progression of our strategy and positions us well to open even more doors into the Japanese market for Klaveness Dry Bulk and the wider Klaveness group,” he said.

The Klaveness group consists of a holding structure and four operating companies.

Klaveness Combination Carriers owns vessels that carry wet and dry cargo, while Klaveness Dry Bulk manages the world’s largest panamax pool, co-owned with Marubeni, and Market Manager, a digital platform enabling clients to make data-driven freight decisions.

Then there is Klaveness Ship Management and Klaveness Digital.

The group operates about 90 ships.
