Alexander Varvarenko’s dry bulk and container shipping company Varamar has established a new base in Turkey to respond to growing demand.

The operator of a fleet of four ships carrying breakbulk, dry bulk, oversized and containerised cargo has opened up in Istanbul.

The company said requirements from clients are expanding in the Caspian Sea and Middle East regions.

Varamar Istanbul will be run by new managing director Emre Oncu.

He has extensive experience in shipping, previously holding a senior chartering role at Core Shipping in Istanbul.

The operator said the move was a “logical step” for its semi-liner services to and from Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

All of these serve the Mediterranean and Black Seas, as well as Turkey.

“We see the growing potential of Turkey, and the wider Caspian and Middle East region, and would therefore like to lay the foundation for the company’s future growth on the crossroads between east and west,” Oncu said.

“Varamar has been providing trusted shipping solutions since its formation in 2009, and our new operation in Istanbul will offer the same full package of services, including document support, port operations monitoring and engineering, as well as unrivalled cargo care and customer service.”

Solutions for oversized cargoes

The company develops transport solutions for dismantled plants, factories, wind turbines, bridges, vehicles and even stadiums.

It is also involved in tramp shipments of dry bulk cargo and containers.

Varamar has recently opened bases in Shanghai, Houston and Athens.

The shipowner already has offices in Belgium, Germany, Italy, Ukraine, Canada and the United Arab Emirates.

The company was set up by Belgium-based Varvarenko, who also owns the ShipNext chartering platform.
