A fire broke out aboard an APL boxship off the coast of western India Friday night.
According to the Indian Coast Guard and local media reports, the fire started on the 10,106-teu APL Le Havre (built 2012) while the ship was about 40 nautical miles offshore.
The cause of the fire is not known, but it reportedly struck four containers. All 26 crew members are said to be safe.
The Coast Guard's firefighting efforts were reportedly complicated by bad weather.
According to automatic identification system data, the ship is at anchor in the Gulf of Kutch south of Mundra.
The ship was initially destined for Nhava Sheva, east of Mumbai.
In March, insurer TT Club said there was a major containership fire every 60 days, resulting in millions of dollars worth of damage to both ships and cargo.
Last week, Hapag-Lloyd said it would penalize shippers $15,000 per container for misdeclaration of hazardous cargoes.
The new rule goes into effect 15 September.
The APL Le Havre is classed by DNV GL and insured by North of England.
