A fire has been extinguished on board a laid-up NYK Line cruiseship in Japan.

The blaze broke out on the 50,000-gt Asuka II (built 1990) at Yokohama on Tuesday afternoon.

The vessel has been docked there since 1 April after Japanese owner NYK scrapped cruises due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The Japan Coast Guard said it received a report by radio from a crew member around 1300 local time (4am GMT).

It was told the ship's crew were trying to extinguish the fire.

No passengers were on board at the time, and there were no injuries, it said.

The extent of any damage has not yet been reported.

Kyodo News sent a helicopter up to film black smoke billowing from the upper deck.

NYK said the fire broke out on the top floor used to store materials. The blaze was extinguished at 1615 local time.

Anchored since April

The Yokohama city authority said Asuka II has been anchored at Osanbashi Pier since 1 April. Asuka II has a passenger capacity of 872 and a crew of 150.

NYK made the decision to call off cruises in February.

The giant shipowner and operator said all voyages on Asuka II were cancelled from March, although it left its July itinerary untouched at that time.

NYK was considering moving a cancelled world cruise to 2021.

Asuka II is classed by NKK and insured by the UK P&I Club.
