Two crew members have died in a fire on a general cargo ship off the coast of Turkey.

The blaze broke out in the engine room of the 6,600-dwt FG Sevil (built 2009), according to Turkey’s transport & infrastructure ministry.

The Panama-flagged ship was off the island of Sedef in the Sea of Marmara at the time, heading to Yalova in Bulgaria.

The seafarers were found unresponsive in the engine room and were later confirmed dead.

No cause has yet been identified for the fire.

An investigation has been opened and further inspections of the vessel will take place, according to a ministry statement cited by Turkiye Today.

The ship is operated by FG Denizcilik of Istanbul, which has been contacted for comment.

The Directorate General of Coastal Safety said it sent its KEGM-4 fast rescue boat, as well as the tugs Kurtarma-7 and Sark, to the scene.

After the flames were extinguished, the 104-metre ship was towed by the tugs into the Kartal anchorage area.

The vessel has a clean port state control detention record.

Its insurer is not known.

FG Denizcilik is listed as operating three other small general cargo ships of between 3,000 dwt and 4,500 dwt, one dating from 1991 and two from 2005.
