The Hellenic Coast Guard sent vessels to the Greek island of Tilos after a container ship ran aground on Friday.
The Protothema website reported that the 1,102-teu Med Cerkezkoy (built 1998) got stuck to the west of the island.
There has been no sign of pollution, and the crew of 17 Turkish nationals are safe and uninjured.
No water ingress has been reported.
The ship left the Greek port of Piraeus on Thursday, bound for Latakia in Syria.
The 146-metre, Turkey-flag feeder vessel is being attended by two coast guard ships, and a tug was reported to be on its way to the site.
Weather conditions are said to be good and the ship is in no danger. AIS data showed it still aground on Friday afternoon.
The mayor of Tilos, Maria Kamma, told ERT South Aegean radio that relevant services are on alert. “We are following the issue calmly,” she said.
No port state control detentions
The ship is owned by Turkey’s Medlog Shipping & Trading, a group company of Swiss liner giant MSC Mediterranean Shipping Co.
MSC has been contacted for further information.
The Med Cerkezkoy has insurance cover through the West of England P&I Club.
It has a clean port state control inspection detention record going back to 1999.
