A fisherman was reported missing after a collision involving an LPG carrier, a coal vessel and a fishing boat off Bangladesh.

The accident involving the 5,508-cbm gas vessel Era Star (built 2023) took place on Friday off Mongla, the Bangladesh Coast Guard said.

The Liberia-flagged gas carrier had left the port on 1 November to arrive at anchorage, where it remained on Tuesday, according to AIS data.

The Daily Observer reported that a fisherman fell into the sea following the incident.

He was named as Abdul Hakim, 18.

Video footage showed a coastguard diver jumping into the sea from a rescue ship.

The coastguard named the third vessel involved as the Mizan, a small cargo ship carrying 500 tonnes of coal.

This ship was heading to Jashore with a cargo from Mongla.

It and the Era Star were travelling towards each other from different directions and collided head-on, according to Shipwreck Log.

Five fishermen fell from the trawler, while the eight seafarers on the Mizan also jumped into the water, fearing their vessel was sinking.

All reportedly made it to shore.

Significant damage

The Mizan suffered significant damage to its bow, resulting in water ingress.

Reports said the owner of the Mizan began lightering the coal onto another ship.

The LPG carrier is operated by Global International Logistics of Hong Kong, which could not be contacted.

Insurance is provided by the West of England.

The ship has been inspected three times by port state officials, with no deficiencies found.
