A captain has died after staying on board his sinking offshore support vessel until all his crew were evacuated.

Egyptian media said the 5,200-hp Inspecta7 (built 1999), operated by domestic company Inspecta International Group, was lost on Wednesday morning off Ras Ghareb in the Red Sea.

Master Yousry Sultan reportedly drowned as he oversaw the rescue of his crew.

The body of engineer Adal Nassar was found inside the hull, 18 hours after the sinking. He had been reported as missing.

Eleven other seafarers were rescued.

The Inspecta7 is believed to have hit the wreck of a submerged vessel on the seabed.

The survivors confirmed the ship hit a solid submerged object and water then poured in from the bottom of the hull.

Survivors jumped clear

Most of the crew were able to jump from the vessel.

VesselsValue assesses the Inspecta7 as worth $700,000. It is reported to be chartered to the Egypt General Petroleum Corp.

Shorouk News said naval vessels were sent to the scene.

No pollution has yet been reported.

The vessel, which was en route to another OSV that was having technical problems, has no port state control inspection detentions in the past five years.

Authorities have begun an investigation.
