Indonesia’s Global Maritim Industri says the fire that broke out on one of its product tankers was small, causing only a damaged vent valve and some blistered paint.
A senior executive told TradeWinds that the fire broke out at a tank venting point on the 37,155-dwt Rosa Dini (built 2003) when a thunderstorm passed over Jurong Port Tank Terminals (JPTT) early on Wednesday morning.
Investigations are underway to find the source of ignition. It is unclear whether the fire started because of a direct lightning strike or static electricity in the air.
Loading operations had already been suspended.
“It was a small fire, and never uncontrolled,” the executive said.
The ship’s classification society, DNV, is conducting checks on the Rosa Dini, which is expected to resume loading as soon as these have been completed.
The Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said the Singapore Civil Defence Force marine and land-based firefighting forces, MPA patrol craft and JPTT’s emergency response unit attended to the incident.
Smoke was observed on the forward part of the tanker, which had arrived from Indonesia on Tuesday.
The fire was declared extinguished within two hours, and the crew were noted as safe and accounted for.
The MPA said there was no damage to the tanks and berths at JPTT.
