A Hamburg Sud neo-panamax containership had suffered a hull breach after hitting a ferry pier in Brazil.

The incident occurred as the 9,669-teu Cap San Antonio (built 2014) was leaving the port of Santos on the afternoon of 20 June.

Video footage showed a gash in the boxship's port side hull just above the waterline, through which ballast water was pouring.

Separate footage also showed damage to the Ponta da Praia dock, which will need extensive repairs.

Brazilian media reported that the ship hit the jetty on the Guaruja side of the port.

According to the port's waterway department, the collision damaged a boarding platform for cyclists. Ferry crossings were halted in the early afternoon, but were later resumed.

An investigation involving the country's 8th Naval District Command has begun.

AP Moller-Maersk-owned Hamburg Sud confirmed to TradeWinds that the Cap San Antonio was involved in an incident while departing the port complex en route to Paranagua.

No injuries or pollution

"At this time there has been no reports regarding physical injuries on or off the vessel or pollution in the area," the containership operator said.

"We are currently assessing the situation on the ground and collaborating with authorities accordingly."

Hamburg Sud did not comment on the cause of the accident.

The Danish-flagged vessel has no port state control detentions on record going back to its delivery. The ship is insured by the London P&I Club.

AIS data showed the unit remained at anchor in Santos on Monday morning.

Data from UK shipbroker Clarksons shows the ship was ordered by Hamburg Sud in 2011 for $118m, while VesselsValue assesses it as still worth $116m in record markets.
