An Indonesian bulker master was found dead by his crew in his cabin after he failed to answer knocks on his door.

The captain was named as Paijo Budhet Kunarno, 53, of the 46,700-dwt Aurora Christine (built 2000).

The vessel was at the port of Cilacap in Indonesia when the body was found on Monday, marine police said.

The Times Indonesia newspaper cited police as saying the master was discovered sitting in a work chair with his head facing upwards.

Cilacap Chief of Police Dery Agung Wijaya said the captain had returned to his room in apparent good health on Sunday evening after eating with the chief engineer and another officer.

In the morning, the chief officer knocked on his door but heard nothing.

He returned 25 minutes later but still received no sign from the master.

The officer then alerted other crew who agreed they should enter. The door was not locked.

The body was taken to hospital for a post-mortem. No signs of foul play were found.

Port authorities carried out the operation in accordance with Covid-19 evacuation procedures.

Coronavirus tests came back negative for all crew.

The operator is listed as Asia Mulia Transpasifik (AMT) of Indonesia. TradeWinds has tried to contact the company.

AMT has a fleet of seven other bulkers and tugs.
