The Indian Navy has rescued nine of the seafarers who went missing from a small tanker that capsized off the coast of Oman, but another of the mariners has been found dead.
Oman’s Maritime Security Centre said 10 crew members from the 7,056-dwt Prestige Falcon (built 2007) have been found.
“Tragically, one crew member was found deceased,” the centre said on X. “The search and rescue operations continue for the remaining members of the vessel’s crew.”
An Indian Navy spokesperson posted a photo on X that showed the warship Teg approaching a covered lifeboat.
The spokesman said the frigate rescued eight Indians and one Sri Lankan crew member while it was carrying out search operations in coordination with Omani authorities.
TradeWinds reported on Tuesday that 16 seafarers were missing after the product tanker capsized.
“The search and rescue by Indian and Omani assets is being undertaken in challenging weather conditions as the area is experiencing rough sea and strong winds,” the spokesperson tweeted.
India has also deployed a long-range reconnaissance aircraft to search for survivors.
The Prestige Falcon is listed as owned and operated by Netco FZE based in Al Hamriyah, Sharjah, according to ownership database Equasis.
The company owns and operates two other small product tankers, according to Equasis. The ship is classed by Zianlian Chuen and Asia Shipping Certification Services.
Its insurance provider is not known.
