An Ocean Network Express (ONE) container ship which was involved in a major grounding in the Suez Canal has been taken out of service and is now awaiting repairs in Turkey.
The 8,600-teu ONE Orpheus (built 2006) had a mechanical fault which caused it to hit a floating bridge and then ground in the Suez Canal on 6 December.
The ship was heading north for Rotterdam when the accident happened but the casualty did not cause any major disruption to the canal’s traffic.
The ONE Orpheus was forced to undergo a safety inspection in Port Said after transiting the canal.
ONE told shippers that the vessel will have to be dry-docked for “additional urgent repairs”.
The vessel was forced to offload its cargo in Piraeus for transhipment.
According to AIS data, the ONE Orpheus is now moored at the port of Icdas in Turkey awaiting repair at the Icdas Dry Dock.
There are no indications as to the extent of the damage or how long the repairs will take.
There has been no statement yet on whether the general average will be declared by the ship’s owner Japan’s Meiji Shipping.
The vessel’s protection and indemnity insurance is placed with Norway’s Gard.
