One seafarer has been confirmed as dead following the sinking of a tugboat in the tugboat in Singapore.
The tugboat, the Singapore-flagged vessel Oshio, sank in the eastern anchorage within Singapore port limits during the afternoon of 4 September, the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore said in a statement.
Two crew members were reported to be on the tugboat at the time of the incident.
A 39-year-old crew member was rescued by the Singapore Police Coast Guard and was taken to the hospital where he later died.
The other is listed as missing.
The Singapore maritime authority said that it is coordinating a search and rescue operation with the coastguard and the Singapore Civil Defence Force for the second crew member, whose age and gender were not revealed.
Both crew members were Indonesian, according to the Straits Times newspaper.
“MPA [Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore] has activated salvage divers to confirm the location of the sunken tug for salvage operations and is issuing navigational broadcasts for vessels to keep clear of the area,” said the authority in a press release.
No oil pollution has been reported, it added.
The circumstances of the tugboat sinking are unclear, and there were no reports of any other vessels being involved.
The last known location of the tugboat, based on vessel tracking website data, was about 0.9 nautical miles (1.6 km) off the Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, at the Eastern Petroleum C Anchorage within Singapore port limits.
TrdaeWinds was unable to find details of the Oshio and its owners in available shipping databases.
