Two crew members have died in unexplained circumstances on a Greek bulker
The Globo website reported that Oleksiy Stavytskyy, 34, and Gutsu Denys, whose age was not confirmed, were found in the bathrooms of their cabins on the 82,000-dwt Caravos Harmony (built 2013) off the coast of Macapa in Brazil on 21 February.
The Seles Nafes website said the men were found dead in a restroom after a shift, however.
The Marshall Islands-flag vessel was later anchored in the Amazon for investigations.
There has still been no official information about what caused the deaths.
Stavytskyy, from Ukraine, was the second engineer and his Filipino colleague was the third engineer.
The vessel is operated by Iason Hellenic Shipping of Athens, which has been contacted for further information.
The bulker was reported to have left Port Elizabeth in South Africa to head across the Atlantic.
Negative for Covid
The 19 seafarers on board have tested negative for Covid. All were said to be in good health.
The health authority of Amapa and the national health surveillance agency (Anvisa) sent medical teams to the ship.
The vessel has insurance cover through Britannia P&I in the UK.
The bulker was last detained in Vancouver in 2019, when 18 deficiencies were found.
The reason for the detention was hull damage impairing seaworthiness following a collision in Vancouver.
In 2021, an accident report by Canada’s Transportation Safety Board found that the ship had hit a capesize bulker in the port due to “breakdowns in situational awareness and communications”.
