A ropax operated by Italy's Tirrenia has arrived in the port of Naples after suffering a fire at sea.
The 14,400-gt Beniamino Carnevale (built 1992) made it safely to the port under tow on Thursday afternoon with no injuries among the eight passengers and 22 crew members, according to Italian newspaper Il Mattino.
The Italian Coast Guard station in Civitavecchia coordinated what it described as a "complex rescue" after receiving a distress signal on Tuesday night from the vessel, which can carry 172 passengers in addition to vehicles and freight.
The ship was near the island of Ventotene when it suffered a fire in the engine room, according to a statement from the Coast Guard.
Officials said the crew were able to quickly extinguish the fire using the onboard firefighting systems.
"The event that occurred, however, made it impossible to restart the propulsion system and resume the regular course toward the port of Cagliari," the Coast Guard said.
Authorities dispatched two patrol boats from the ports of Ponza and Gaeta, in addition to a Coast Guard aircraft.
Also sent to the ship was the Rimorchiatori Napoletani-controlled salvage tug Guarracino (built 2002), which reached the Beniamino Carnevale on Wednesday night and began towing it to Naples.
The Italian-flag Beniamino Carnevale is classed by Rina and has protection and indemnity cover by the Standard Club.
