A crewman from Myanmar has died after a fight with a colleague on a product tanker off Taiwan.
The incident on the 7,700-dwt New Progress (built 1995) took place on Friday in international waters 31 nautical miles (57 km) from Shihmen, the island nation's Coast Guard Administration (CGA) said.
Authorities had received an emergency call from the Cook Islands-flagged ship.
The 27-year old victim, named as Wai Phy Aumg, was airlifted to Taipei's Songshan Airport but was declared dead on arrival at hospital.
He was reported to have sustained a stab wound during a fight with another crew member, the CGA said.
No jurisdiction
The vessel was temporarily anchored at the Port of Keelung after the incident.
The coastguard said the case was outside its jurisdiction, but would assist in the investigation if the ship's owner made the request.
The vessel's operator, Jin Hao Ship Management of Taiwan, could not immediately be contacted.
In December, a potential murder investigation began after a crewman was killed on a Vietnamese bulker off Russia.
Vietnam's foreign ministry spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang said a Vietnamese national was found dead on the 34,000-dwt Inlaco Express (built 2011) at Vostochny on 28 November.
The seafarer was killed in a fight on the vessel, the spokesperson said.
Earlier last year, a crewman was arrested in Los Angeles after a colleague was stabbed to death on a CP Offen boxship chartered to Mediterranean Shipping Co.
The 14,000-teu MSC Ravenna (built 2011) was en route from China to the US when the incident occurred.
