A crew member has died in an accident on board a Balearia ropax during unloading operations in Spain.

The unnamed 40-year-old was found dead between two trucks on the 24,000-gt Napoles (built 2002) at Algeciras on Tuesday night, according to the Puente de Mando website.

Colleagues notified the emergency services.

The master immediately performed cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, followed later by an Algeciras medical team, but to no avail.

The incident temporarily halted the disembarkation of vehicles from the ship while police examined the scene.

An investigation has been launched, but no cause of death has yet been confirmed.

Balearia expressed its deepest regret and said it has offered its support to the family after notifying authorities.

The shipowner classed the death as a “work accident” and is working to clarify what happened.

LNG conversions

The Napoles operates on a route to and from Tangier in Morocco.

In 2019, the ferry was retrofitted to run on LNG as well as diesel at the nearby Gibdock shipyard over three months as part of a $440m programme in which six vessels were converted to gas and three LNG-fuelled newbuildings ordered.

The project was completed in 2022.

Balearia has a fleet of 30 ropaxes and ferries in operation.

A 1,200-passenger catamaran, the Margarita Salas, is being built at Spain’s Armon shipyard in Gijon for delivery in July.
