A shipyard worker has died in Malaysia after his scarf became trapped in machinery.

Angkam Engkang, 44, was painting a vessel's hull when the tragic accident occurred in the Rantau Panjang Shipbuilding zone on Tuesday.

Sibu police assistant commissioner Stanley Jonathan Ringgit told The Star newspaper that the Kapit resident died when the end of the neck scarf became tangled in a brush grinder.

"He was found hanging from a wire of a crane as a result of the accident and was pronounced dead by paramedics from Sibu Hospital," he said.

The grinder was attached to the crane by the wire.

"Based on the initial testimony from the victim's brother, his neck was tangled with the scarf he was using and it was found that the tail of the scarf was squeezed by the brush grinder," Stanley said.

Engkang was only found when a colleague tried to call his phone and then went to look for him after getting no response.

Dangerous occupation

The incident again highlights the dangers of shipbuilding and shiprepair for workers.

Last week, a 21-year-old employee died in an accident at Turkish demolition yard Isiksan Ship Recycling.

Local reports indicate that the man, named as Can Sunmez, died after he was hit on the head by a guard rail following an accident involving a crane at the yard.

He was reportedly working on the demolition of an offshore rig at the time.

Isiksan, which is part of the Dikkan industrial group, is regarded as one of the leading green recycling yards in the Turkish shipbreaking region of Aliaga.
