Three seafarers have died and another five were reported missing after a collision between two containerships off China.
The accident involving the 1,290-teu Xin Qi Sheng 69 (built 2018) and 1,714-teu Oceana (built 2013) happened early on Monday in the East China Sea off Shanghai.
The dead and missing are from Xin Qi Sheng 69. The Shanghai Maritime Shipping Bureau said the ship sank with 650 boxes on board.
The German manager of the Oceana, Leonhardt & Blumberg (L&B), confirmed the incident.
Rescue operations by Chinese authorities are ongoing.
No injuries on German ship
The Oceana remained anchored off the port of Shanghai awaiting further instructions from the Chinese authorities on Monday.
L&B said that on Sunday night the vessel suffered a suspected electrical issue with its steering gear and collided with the Chinese boxship.
Oceana has sustained substantial damage as a result of the impact of the collision with a full assessment taking place later, the company added.
"Leonhardt & Blumberg would like to express its great concern over the incident and are expressing their deepest sympathy to the families of the crew of Xin Qi Sheng 69," the manager added.
"There are no injuries on board of Oceana," L&B said. "The exact circumstances of the collision are yet unclear. A full investigation into the root cause will follow."
The Oceana's protection and indemnity cover is from Gard in Norway. The vessel has a clean port state control record.
The Chinese vessel is owned by Xiamen Qisheng Shipping of Xiamen. No port state control inspections or insurance provider are listed for the ship.
