TradeWinds is historically more comfortable breaking the news than making headlines of our own.
At this year’s Posidonia sailing competition, however, our team found itself in the midst of a little maritime drama - with some cracking pictures to match.
While George Procopiou and his team claimed victory in their racing superyacht, Team TradeWinds collected a small place in Posidonia sailing history as the first team to be “dismasted”.
“It was an absolute gun shot,” said Jon Spencer, head of marketing solutions and partnerships, reflecting on the moment when the mast broke and came tumbling down.
While it was a dangerous moment, fortunately no one onboard was hurt and the wreckage of the mast and sails were quickly hauled on board before they could damage the hull.
Having fired up the engine and returned safely to port, the team found the pictures of the incident playing on the big screen in the highlights reel alongside a host of happy trophy winners.
Procopiou was at the wheel to score the superyacht class win ahead of Seanergy Maritime Holdings and Contship.
Victory in the performance class went to Totalenergies – Lubmarine ahead of Thomas Miller, while Euroseas / Eurodry won the day in the standard class.
