Six fishermen have died after becoming trapped in their capsized trawler following a collision with a cargoship off Chile.
The 1,000-dwt Comau (built 1982) came into contact with a fishing boat called Victoria in fog in the port of Corral in the Los Rios region on Tuesday morning.
The region's governor said six of seven crew members on the trawler sought refuge in the galley, prompting an operation to try to save them, local media reported.
The navy said in a statement that authorities took rapid action to reach the site in 15 minutes.
Four boats with rescue divers were in attendance, but the divers said it was impossible to access the room where the crew were.
The only survivor was transferred to hospital with hypothermia.
Corral city mayor Gaston Perezsaid "six Corralenos, seasoned fishermen, have died", according to local rpeorts.
He added: "I feel powerless in the face of all this. Nor do I want to judge but something else should have been done."
The Valdivia Regional Prosecutor's Office announced an investigation into the cause of the tragedy, and who bears responsibility.
Low visibility has been blamed for the incident by authorities.
The general cargoship is managed by Chilean owner Navimag.
Equasis has no port state control inspections listed for the vessel.
