China Navigation Co (CNCo) has made a rare appearance in the secondhand market, buying a modern feeder-sized containership, Singapore-based brokers said this week.

The 1,740-teu Hansa Ludwigsburg (built 2011), which is controlled by Germany’s Leonhardt & Blumberg, is the first purchase CNCo has made this year.

The Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard Co-built ship is said to have been sold for $13.8m.

It is unclear whether it has been sold charter free. TradeWinds is told it is currently operating in Northern Asia.

Container capacity

Although CNCo is best known for its modern multipurpose vessels and bulkers, which are operated under the Swire Shipping and Swire Bulk brands, it also owns and operates a small number of containerships that are of a similar container capacity to the Hansa Ludwigsburg.

These vessels are deployed on Swire Shipping’s liner services in Southeast Asia and the Pacific region.

CNCo said it was unable to comment on the purchase.

Another Leonhardt & Blumberg-controlled feeder containership, the 1,732-teu Hansa Marburg (built 2007), was sold for a reported $5.8m to fledgling German feeder operator Okee Maritime earlier this month.
