Mitsui & Co-backed tech firm Bearing AI is launching a new emissions tracking service after collaborating with container line Hapag-Lloyd.
The Silicon Valley start-up says its Fleet Deployment Optimizer will be the first artificial intelligence-powered tool for monitoring, predicting and optimising boxship carbon output.
The Palo Alto-based firm added that the German shipowner has provided in-depth feedback through the development process.
The service uses Bearing AI’s Decision Engine platform to help owners accurately simulate future emissions and compare the efficiency of different vessels across potential schedules.
“This tool helps customers maximise environmental compliance while still considering service requirements, fleet composition and other critical business needs,” Bearing AI said.
The idea is to monitor the Carbon Intensity Indicator performance of multiple ships, accounting for adjustments such as reefer usage.
CII scores from moving high-performing or more problematic vessels to an alternative service will be calculated.
Both the tech company and the shipowner said they understand that technology will play an important role in enabling companies to meet their emissions-reduction goals, while still maintaining service reliability and profitability.
“We’re delighted to be working closely with Hapag-Lloyd, a company that’s passionate about the future of this industry,” added Bearing AI co-founder and chief executive Dylan Keil.
“They share our dedication to developing and applying technologies that pave the way for more sustainable operations in this new green era of global shipping,” he added.
More features coming
Enhancements are planned for the tool in the near future.
Bearing AI is in the process of adding additional support for the European Union’s Emissions Trading System.
The company was founded in 2019, with support from Japanese trader Mitsui & Co and AI Fund, a venture capital firm led by artificial intelligence pioneer Andrew Ng.
Last year, Japanese shipowner Iino Kaiun partnered with Bearing AI to help it comply with CII rules.
