Celsius Shipping has scored a significant profit by selling a containership it purchased four years ago.

Brokers in Europe and in the US said the Danish shipowner has sold the 3,534-teu GH Scirocco (built 2009) to an undisclosed buyer for $14.5m.

Celsius paid just $6.2m for the Shanghai Shipyard-built vessel when it bought it from Germany’s Hansa Treuhand in March 2017.

Celsius chairman Jeppe Jensen confirmed the sale. He said the vessel is expected to be delivered to the new owner in June.

The company has eight containerships in its fleet. They were built between 2008 and 2014.

Copenhagen-based Celsius is often involved in asset-play deals.

US brokers also claimed the company has sold the 63,000-dwt bulker GH Seabird (built 2016), but Jensen did not respond to a request for comment on the deal.

Brokers reported the ship changed hands for $19.5m, which would also be a profitable move. Celsius bought the ship as a newbuilding from Italy’s d’Amico Group in a 2016 resale deal worth $17m.

The GH Seabird was one of 12 ultramaxes Celsius bought at the bottom of the market in 2016. In January and February of this year, the Jensen-led company sold two of them.

Founded in 2012, Celsius has a fleet of more than 50 ships, including bulkers, tankers and containerships. It is backed by Bayside Capital and Breakwater Capital.
