A CMA CGM-chartered container ship has suffered a fire, but its crew was quickly able to control the blaze.
Danaos Shipping, manager of the 6,552-teu CMA CGM Rabelais (built 2010), said the fire broke out at 1200 GMT Wednesday in a container on the ship’s deck.
“The master immediately ordered a firefighting operation and the fire was soon controlled and remains so,” said the company.
The Malta-flagged ship is owned by New York-listed Danaos Corp, a containership owner whose chief executive and biggest shareholder is Danaos Shipping owner John Coustas.
During the firefighting effort, one crew member was injured when he slipped and fell, fracturing his ribs.
Danaos Shipping said he received first aid on board and is in stable condition, but he will be evacuated and taken to a hospital when the ship arrives at Port Kelang, Malaysia, later on Thursday.
The vessel was in transit from Singapore to India at the time of the incident, which took place in the Strait of Malacca. Satellite tracking data from VesselsValue shows the vessel reversed course when it was off the north-west tip of Sumatra and is heading to Port Kelang.
Danaos Shipping said a firefighting tug was en route to assist.
No pollution was reported in the incident.
Earlier Thursday, shipping claims consultant WK Webster reported that the vessel suffered an explosion and fire while it was north-west of Sabang, Indonesia, and was adrift after the incident.
However, the Danaos Shipping statement did not reference a blast or say that the vessel was drifting.
The CMA CGM Rabelais is classed by DNV. It has protection and indemnity coverage from the Swedish Club insurance mutual.
