Ocean Network Express (ONE) is collaborating with Sony Network Communications Europe to develop and integrate a smart container system across its global container ship fleet.
The companies said Sony’s sensing and connectivity technologies will give the Japanese liner group greater insights into its container fleet movements, with data enabling better visibility of boxes and their more efficient use.
Smart container solutions will also give shippers access to live updates throughout a shipment’s journey and provide easier and more transparent communication with stakeholders, they added.
Sony is already working in the logistics technology space through its Visilion cargo and asset tracking system, which is used by freight forwarders and trucking companies.
ONE product & network managing director Hiroki Tsujii said the partners aim to “create the future of container shipping where we have access to the insights we need to offer our customers a higher quality of service.
“Our joint mission will aim to push the limits of what we are capable of with innovative logistics technologies.”
ONE is the world’s seventh-largest container carrier, operating more than 205 vessels with a fleet size of about 1.5m teu. It was formed in 2017 from the container service integrations of K Line, Mitsui OSK Lines and NYK Line.
