Three big shipping names have joined the Baltic Exchange Council, the body that governs the Baltic’s strategy and activities.

The new council members are Guy Hindley, managing partner of dry cargo at Howe Robinson; Denis Petropoulos from Braemar Shipping Services; and Andy James, head of risk management at China Navigation.

They replace Lambros Varnavides and John Hadjipateras, who have stepped down from the council.

John Hadjipateras will, however, remain on the Baltic Membership Council.

“I am hugely grateful for both Lambros and John’s contributions, wise counsel and their commitment to the Baltic Exchange,” said Mark Jackson, the organisation’s chief executive, who also sits on the council.

The council is chaired by Duncan Dunn, who by day is senior director at SSY Futures.

The body governs the Baltic’s strategy for membership services, social responsibility, charities and its relationship with its members, governments, regulatory bodies and the global shipping community.

The other members are Stefan Albertijn; Colm Nolan, Chris Reilly, Haralambos J Fafalios, Catherine Bacon, Michael Syn and Flemming Jacobs.

To be appointed to the council, each officeholder must first be nominated by Baltic members, vetted by the incumbent council and approved by Baltic member representatives.
