Eurobulk has bought a 13-year-old panamax from Nissen Kaiun of Japan, US and European brokers say.

The Greek shipowner is said to have purchased the Imabari Shipbuilding-constructed, 76,000-dwt Osmarine (built 2006) for $9.5m.

Eurobulk did not respond to requests for comment.

The market has an appetite for panamaxes of this age, and a number of deals have been concluded in recent weeks.

For example, d’Amico Dry of Italy sold two Japanese-built units — the 76,000-dwt Medi Cagliari (built 2004) and Medi Baltimore (built 2005) — to Chinese buyers for $7.9m and $8.4m, respectively.

Last October, Eurobulk's New York-listed affiliate — EuroDry — bought the 75,000-dwt Star of Nippon (built 2004), reportedly for $9.8m. The Sanoyas Shipbuilding-constructed vessel has been renamed Starlight. Eurobulk and EuroDry are both controlled by the Pittas family.

EuroDry, which trades on the Nasdaq, has a fleet of six panamaxes and one ultramax bulker. Eurobulk manages a fleet of 21 ships in a mix of bulkers and containerships.
